$20 Million Grant
Improving the teaching and learning of mathematics for Milwaukee Public Schools’ (MPS) 100,000 students takes the effort and collaboration of many players. But with the help of a $20 million 5-year grant from the National Science Foundation, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), MPS and Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) have joined forces to form the Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP) and reach that goal.

Grant to help student achievement

Partnership Keeps Changing for the Better

partnerships between the public schools, business and industry, teacher
unions and higher education institutions that prepare teachers. And they

Partnerships for Education Strives to Increase Student Success in Urban Schools
UWM's Partnerships for Education is working with the Milwaukee Public
Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College and educational institutions
throughout southeastern Wisconsin to prepare more students for college,
strengthen the teacher workforce and integrate technology into the
classroom. The MPA also has ties as the two groups are working together

MPA Gains National Attention
The MPA received a Holmes Partnership award for its contributions to
urban education. The Kenneth Howey Award for Contribution to Urban
Education was presented to the MPA at the Holmes Partnership's annual

A strong mathematics program is a vital part of any curriculum and now
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will have more resources to make sure
their students improve in math. This past fall, the National Science

Tutors Help Boost Student Reading Levels at Cass Street School
Students at Cass Street School saw a dramatic increase in their reading
levels thanks to nearly 100 volunteers who participated in a first-time
UWM tutoring program at the school. The strategy behind the tutoring and
